How to Build a Well Known Personal Brand

I’ve learned so much about what it means to build a personal brand and what it means to be a leader online! So, today I want to layout 4 different strategies that will help you build a well-known personal brand, get more visibility, become well-known, and attract a bigger audience.

What is a personal brand?

First things first, I want to clarify what I mean when I say personal brand. Yes, a personal brand is you. You are your personal brand, but I think we have almost leaned too far in the #authenticlife and I think the strategy has fallen a little bit to the wayside. 

What the strategy is there to do is support you.

You know, you’re the brand, you’re the product, you’re the thing that people desire; they want to follow you, they want to learn from you, they want to buy from you. But, I think somewhere along the way people started to think that was enough. “If I just be myself and talk about the thing I’m passionate about, I will succeed.”

That’s just not really how it works. There are strategies and tools that you can use to support the beautiful uniqueness that is you.

1) THE MARATHON STRATEGY

When you’re starting a business and building a personal brand, you really have a choice as to what marathon you would like to run. 

Do you want to run the one with thousands of other people…or 10 other people?

What I mean by this is that it is incredibly important for you to choose a niche when building a personal brand. Especially when you are just starting out. 

Now, a niche is a specific area of a market. And, the more niche you actually become, the less competition you will have. You’ll be running with 10 people, rather than thousands. Get it?

If you’re running a marathon with thousands of other people, forget how much harder it would be to actually win, but imagine how hard it would be to even be seen! The more specific you go, the more of those competitors you eliminate from the race altogether. And, this makes SO much more room for mastery. 

Something that I teach in my In-Demand course is mastery. Lovely, you cannot get to Oprah levels of success without putting in an Oprah level of work. You’re going to have to put in the work to learn and master your area of expertise. 

I am not saying you need to know everything, I am saying by niching down, you are limiting the AMOUNT you need to learn along the process of your journey. 

There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t learn something about personal branding and leadership. 

So you eliminate the amount of competition there is and you diminish the amount you need to master.

2) THE PURPLE COW STRATEGY

If you’ve never heard of Seth Godin, he’s an incredible marketer, who wrote a book called Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable. 

What the purple cow strategy is all about is basically, your brand needs to be outstandingly memorable. There needs to be something about you that makes you stand-out and makes people think of you. 

You need to be stand-out memorable for your particular audience. And the way that you do that is by knowing your values. When you know your values, when you know what is important to you, your purple cow becomes your values. 

For me, in particular, I’ve had a lot of clients say that they wanted to work with me because my values are freedom and fun. These are the things that make me stand-out and memorable to the people that follow me with similar values. 

So, no, you don’t need purple hair. When it comes to having a purple cow personal brand strategy, you need to ask yourself: How am I going to be remarkable? How am I going to anchor myself to the thing that makes me stand out from everybody else (your values)?

So, yes you need to be you, but having the strategies to magnify the you that you already are, is going to allow you to create a truly successful well-known personal brand.

3) THE FIRST THOUGHT STRATEGY

So, we know we need to niche down and we need to lean into our values, now you need to become consistently visible. 

Having a consistent content strategy is so important so that you are first of mind for your audience.

You need to have a visibility strategy that makes you their first thought. You need to show up consistently and with energy. 

It doesn’t have to be every single day, it has to be consistent. That is how you are going to build a well-known personal brand. 

You’ve got to be front of their minds and fresh on their minds.

4) THE TAYLOR SWIFT STRATEGY

I recently watched the Taylor strategy and one thing that particularly stood out to me was the scene where she invited fans to her house. 

Now, I think most of us know that she has always had an incredible relationship with her audience, but what this scene illustrated for me is just how important it is to create a deep and valuable experience and connection with your audience. 

Now, boundaries are important, but the more that you can create this profound experience with your audience, the more integrated with your brand they will actually become.

You can build a very successful and very profitable brand and business off of a small but devoted group of loyal audience members. It is so important to harness and remember that. 

It is so important to the sustainability of your business and brand that we remain grounded in the importance of the quality of our connections with our audience. So, talk with them, respond to your comments, CARE.

Those connections and that CARE is what is going to push people to support you in return. 

Care enough to show up consistently, to create an incredible product, to reply to comments, to create an incredible client experience…JUST CARE.
