how to STILL live your best life in 2020

So, I want to talk about 2020. Because, well, so far, it’s been an….interesting…year.

Ok, it’s definitely been a challenging year, but no one can deny that it is one that we will always remember.

There is so much opportunity for education, growth, and movement towards an accepting and sustainable future. However, that does not mean, that on an individual level, it isn’t an extremely scary, uncertain, and frustrating time for so many people; both with the pandemic and everything that is going on with the Black Lives Matter movement.

And here, in Australia, we also started the year with some horrendous bush fires. So, for many, it has kind of just seemed like one thing after another.

I feel like, at this stage, so many people are feeling frustrated, maybe even feeling like there isn’t a point in even trying in 2020, anymore.

And that’s why I wanted to talk about how on an individual level, you can still make 2020 incredible.

So, for those that are having a hard time, I wanted to give you some simple personal development strategies that you can use to still achieve your goals, become the very best person that you can be this year and set yourself on a path that will make next year even more amazing.

ACCEPT UNCERTAINTY AND TRY TO FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL

All day, every day, we are inundated with scary information and news about the health of our world, the economy of our world, the state of our world at large. So much of that can just put us into this state of constant fear and frustration. And, that is an extremely detrimental state to be living in.

Now, I’m not saying you should become naive to what’s going on in the world, but I am saying you need to be responsible enough to control your own emotions towards what you’re consuming and how much you’re consuming.

The first step is accepting that this year is going to continue to be uncertain and accepting that you are in control of your own thoughts, your own emotions, and of course your own actions.

Do a little bit of an audit of your life. Are you feeling happy and fulfilled? How are the things that you are doing contributing to how you’re feeling?

Limiting the amount of influence that something that is negatively impacting you, is incredibly powerful.

SET REALISTIC AND ACHIEVABLE GOALS

I’m still an advocate for taking massive action and for taking responsibility for your own success, but you need to find the line between that and what is possible for you (and the rest of the world) right now.

Trying to push through, as you would normally, is not, in my opinion, healthy.

Now, I don’t think sitting on the couch and giving up is healthy either.

So, try and find your way to somewhere in the middle.

Still keep taking action.

Still keep working your way towards those goals and dreams.

Still keep challenging yourself.

Still keep growing, and learning, and developing.

Still keep investing where you can.

And, if it looks a little less audacious than it did at the beginning of the year, don’t feel guilty about that.

The world is in a chaotic situation right now.

The most important thing is that, no matter what your goal is for the future, you are still taking steps towards that. Even if they are tiny steps, right now.

FOCUS ON THE MICRO, NOT THE MACRO

Again, on the goal-setting front, oftentimes we plan for the next 12 months, next 3 years, next 10 years.

And, while I do think it’s important to have a vision for your life and business, again, I think that with the uncertainty of the world right now, this habit can feel extremely pressure-filled.

So rather than saying, in 12 months I want to be doing these things, when on a global scale you don’t even know if that’s possible, focus on the micro.

Say to yourself on Monday morning: What can I do to make THIS week amazing? What is going to make me feel good right here, in this moment?

Focus on what you can control today, right now.

ASK YOURSELF, HOW WOULD THE HAPPIEST VERSION OF ME ACT TODAY?

It might look like just taking it easy and watching some movies.

It might look like exercise.

It might look like working on your business.

It might look like spending time with your family.

So, really intuitively, before you let anything else influence you, ask yourself, how would the happiest version of me act today?

Ask yourself that very simple question and have the courage to trust the answer, to follow-through.

EXPERIENCE YOUR EMOTIONS BUT DON’T ACCEPT THEM AS A NEW REALITY

Allow yourself to have a temper tantrum, to experience your emotions, but make sure you let the emotions out. Don’t except them. Don’t get stuck in that state of emotion.

Try and focus your attention on something else. Don’t get stuck in the things you can’t do, focus on the things you can.

PUT DOWN YOUR FREAKING PHONE AND USE YOUR OWN BRAIN ONCE IN A WHILE

If you are feeling like you are starting to give up on humanity right now, don’t be afraid to take a step back from it all for a moment.

To re-gather your own sense of optimism.

To re-gather your own sense of purpose.

Do a digital detox. Step away from your phone.

Delete Instagram.

Delete Facebook.

Delete Twitter.

You’ve got to take care of you. Of course, you want to do your part for the world at large, and like I said, keep learning and growing, but that can only come from you being in a positive mental state.

You’ve got to get to that space of neutrality, acceptance, and clarity before you can really start progressing.
