Lessons from Sophia Amoruso #GirlBoss

I’ve been getting heaps of message lately about mentors, so I wanted to film this video to help you choose the right mentor for you. When it comes to mentors, there are two different types.

  1. The mentors that know you exist. They’re your coaches, business besties and people in your life that can give you personalised advice while you’re on your journey.

  2. Then there are the people that learn from. You read their books or watch their seminars and reverse engineer their strategies and implement their ideas in your own business.

In this video, I’m talking about the latter because I want to talk about one of the mentors that I adore and have learnt a lot from Sophia Amoruso.

Sophia inspired me at the very beginning of my business journey after reading the book ‘Girl Boss’. Since then, I have loved watching her journey. She went through bankruptcy in her own business only to rise from the ashes to create an inspiring community-focused organisation.

So let’s talk about mentors and some of the biggest learnings from Sophia Amoruso.

You have to back yourself, even when others don’t

If you don’t get anything else from this video, I hope you hear me when I say it’s essential that you back yourself.

If you don’t have a solidified sense of self-belief, then you will not take action in accordance with what is required for you to have success in business.

You need resilience and tenacity. If you don’t think “I’m going to do whatever it takes” to get to where you want to go, you’ll never reach your goals.

You can’t half-ass it and think success will just come, you need to continually back yourself. When things don’t go as planned, you need to continually keep coming back for more.

Back yourself.

You HAVE to take risks

I see a lot of people NOT taking big scary actions without the certainty of them paying off.

Going live on Facebook or launching a course or putting out a consulting package is great but if you’re not putting yourself in a position where there is a possibility of “failure” then you’ll never grow.

Ask yourself “am I playing it safe? Am I doing the bare minimum?” If you want to be like the mentors you look up to, you have to take risks and be innovative to be known.

Find a way to stand out

Sophia always talks about her success stemming from her pursuit to stand out from the rest.

If you’re not getting clients or making sales maybe you’re just not standing out from the crowd. But don’t fret there are a few ways that you can do this.

  1. You can be extremely unique in your branding and messaging.

  2. You can be extremely unique with your personal style.

  3. Or by doing something like going the extra mile and putting in just that little bit of extra effort than you know you’re capable of.

Creating a feeling is the best way to sell

To sell effectively what you really need to do is create a feeling.

You need to create a recognisable experience and feeling within people for you to increase brand longevity. It’s the consistency that keeps people coming back to you and purchasing.

The actions you need to take are consistently showing up in a genuine way that makes your audience feel some type of way. Are they feeling empowered, energised, motivated, loved by you? What feeling is making your audience continuously come back for more?

Choose the right people

Sophia is on this new growth journey to build a social network called ‘Girl Boss’, dah. Which is similar to LinkedIn for women and shay says that what’s really driving this project is having the right people around her.

I speak about networking and having the right people around you a lot on my channels because it’s essential.

Whether it’s a team around you or if you’re only at the start of your journey, it’s networking with others, you need to have the right people around you.

You don’t have to go this alone.

Sophia mentioned in a podcast that one of the things that contributed to her demise was that she had so much control over her personal brand and that was the focus. Her ego got in the way and so to avoid this she has taken a step back and surrounded herself with incredible people.

You need to surround yourself with the RIGHT people.
